The Speech & Hearing Center is celebrating 70 years of service, dedication and impact on the lives of those in the Chattanooga area who are affected by a speech or hearing impairment. Since its founding in 1953, the organization has been committed to enhancing and sustaining quality of life through better communication.

To mark this milestone, we’re celebrating with a series of events and educational content throughout the month of May to coincide with our anniversary and Better Hearing and Speech Month.

Here are other activities to look forward to:

Birthday Bash

To kick off the month, we held joy-filled 70th birthday party at Chattanooga Whiskey Event Hall on April 27 with a signature cocktail, art and silent auction, whiskey tasting and 1885 Grill delicacies. It provided opportunities for community members to come together to celebrate, look to what lies ahead and lend their support to the only nonprofit in the area addressing communication disorders.

Charter Day

The organization was chartered on May 11, 1953. The Center will commemorate our official 70th birthday on May 11, 2023 at 10 a.m. with a Charter Day Open House. We’ll celebrate together with a round of cupcakes and punch. Community members, supporters, partners, former staff and board, physicians, patients: All are welcome!

Guests will hear from the nonprofit’s leadership, along with public officials, including Senator Todd Gardenhire, Tennessee State Senator Bo Watson and Tennessee State Representative Patsy Hazlewood, in a brief commemoration of 7 decades of services. We’re excited to celebrate this important milestone with our community and look forward to continuing to advance our mission and making an even greater impact in the years to come.

SLP Appreciation Day

Next, we’ll recognize our speech therapists and the hard work they do all year long on SLP Appreciation Day on May 18. Help us celebrate our dedicated therapy staff, who work tirelessly to treat communication disorders in our community. You can show them you care by donating a therapy toy. Or buying them a cup of coffee. If a speech therapist has changed you or your child’s life, now’s your chance to stop by the Center on this day to show your appreciation.

Education

All throughout the month, we’ll be about town, educating the public at community health fairs, along with speaking engagements at local professional organizations, churches and civic groups. And we’ll be releasing social content all month to ensure the importance of the diagnosis and treatment of speech and hearing impairments is top of mind for all.

Giving Campaign

And, we’re hosting a month-long giving campaign, so you can help us continue the mission of equal access to better quality of life for all. Donate via Facebook. Visit us for speech or hearing services. Or choose one of the many other ways you can give back on our website. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

And happy Better Hearing and Speech Month!
